24 OCTOBER 2009 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION www.350.org

Women of Faith Leading the Way to Sustainability

Make some “Holy Noise” for the love of God’s Creation The prophet Ezekiel reminds us that we are God’s sentinel’s for the communities we lead. When a moral challenge confronts our nation and world God expects us to blow the trumpet (Ezekiel 33:3). We did so in the hope that we could rid our land of slavery. We did so in the hope that civil rights and voting rights could be guaranteed for all. Today, Joe Naroditsky, Executive Director, Faiths United for Sustainable Energy (FUSE) and Naples Leading the Way for Sustainability invite us to “blow the trumpet” – actually to ring church bells, sound the shofar, speak out prayers or chants – for the love of God’s creation. May this inspire our communities to make the necessary changes in behavior so that all God’s creatures, including our grandchildren, will enjoy the Eden into which we were born.

Ring Your Church Bell 350 times, bell ringers, drummers, Sound the Shofar Speak out prayers or chants for the earth for 350 seconds, (5 min. & 50 seconds)

Sophia, Holy Wisdom, share your vision for all humankind Sing out your truth that we are One with all creation. Open our eyes to the suffering caused by climate change Give us courage to mend our destructive ways. Widen our circle of understanding and compassion so we Nurture, protect and preserve all living species. Teach us how to celebrate nature in its beauty and sacredness. Lead us in the great cosmic dance that makes us whole. Ann Smith

Why 350? 350 parts per million is what many scientists and climate experts are saying is the safe upper limits for CO2 in our atmosphere. As James Hansen, head scientist of NASA says “If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 will need to be reduced from its current 387ppm to at most 350ppm.” October 24, 2009 is the International Day of Climate Action. Already over 1500 actions in over 120 countries have been planned. You can start your own action, or join our actions by going to www.350.or

Our Goal is to raise awareness with citizens and government about climate change and how it will affect our community. Women around the world are organizing events, gathering the people and involving their places of faith. Join us in celebrating October 24th, International Day of Climate Action. Together we will face the challenge of developing timely and successful solutions to sustainability.
